As a State Representative:
- Ben was the prime sponsor of the 1993 bill that reformed private health insurance in Florida.
- Ben was the prime sponsor of legislation that improved the Florida Medicaid system in 1996.
- While State Representative, Ben also served as:
- Deputy Majority Leader
- Chair of the Health Committee
- Chair of the Broward Legislative Delegation
As a County Commissioner:
- Ben was the only commissioner in Broward County to vote against the new voting machines in 2001 because of their lack of a paper trail.
- Ben masterminded the effort to open the Port of Ft. Lauderdale to competition, which brought millions of dollars to Broward County.
As County Mayor:
- Ben led the Broward County Delegation to China in 2006 where he secured multimillion dollar port services and tourism deals for the County.
- Ben orchestrated the cleanup of Broward County following the destruction of Hurricane Wilma with FEMA and local authorities.
